    Synopsis

A dashing young aristocratic pilot in Hitler’s Luftwaffe . . . Through Peter von Vorzik’s letters to his wife, family and comrades, as well as the journal he keeps, we get glimpses of the great aerial battles over Europe and North Africa – Poland, France, the Battle of Britain, Russia, Cyrenaica – and the final massed confrontations over Germany. With his brother a senior member of the SS in Heydrich’s entourage and his sister married to an Italian count, there are also vignettes of the whole Nazi hierarchy and the Byzantine nature of Axis politics. This wartime epic is also a family saga switching between scenes of domestic bliss, political intrigue and the fortunes of war, until the Third Reich is engulfed in a Götterdämmerung of its own making.
