    Synopsis

At birth, John Peacock was endowed with all the gifts save bravado. Thus, his marriage – to a famous don’s beautiful daughter – and the brilliant doctorate (that promised to turn ethics into a science) avail him nothing. Oxford isn’t interested and he and Judith have to take up teaching posts in Lancashire. Life can still be idyllic, all the same: they live amongst fields in a cowman’s cottage; their neighbours, though inquisitive, are friendly. But John falls foul of the farmer, Holden, whose megalomaniac tendencies can only be held in check by his corpulent wife, Marge. His cunning and appetite for persecution seem endless; so Peacock is faced with the triple choice – removal, performing the unmentionable or acquiring quality x. 3 male and 3 female roles are supported by four more males capable of doubling as sixth-formers; impressionistic staging and use of spot are needed to get over frequent scene changes. ‘Flower Hamlet’ is also available as a screenplay.
